During this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to avoid many of the pitfalls while at the same time enjoying the successes they have earned as interveners while helping others

Anger & Hostility in the Workplace
This workshop can be specifically designed to meet your identified needs. We will discuss how to identify angry & potentially dangerous or disruptive customers, clients or co-workers. We will also look at way to defuse these situations while also looking at issues of personal safety. This would include such topics as the physical layout of the workplace while determining if there is a need for such things as alarms, pre-dialed telephones and specific codes to be used in cases of threats.

How To Deal Effectively With Victims/Survivors
This training is intended for organizations or agencies who in the course of their duties or responsibilities may be required to deal with victims or survivors. We will assist you in learning how to appropriately communicate, listen and avoid the pitfalls of inappropriate or untimely communication.

"On scene" response: to critical or traumatic events
Kent G. Laidlaw & Associates will provide highly trained and experienced interveners who can assist your employees or others by providing defusing or debriefing sessions after a serious violent or other traumatic event. This would include such things as a robbery, assault or other violent act. It can also include dealing with the death or terminal illness of an employee or family member . There is ample evidence that show that an early intervention can assist employees to better understand the impact of these events and at the same time show a "corporate care" attitude on behalf of the employer. If your staff can be helped in understanding and normalizing the event there is a greater likelihood of reduced time loss from the workplace. It is a win win situation where the employee and the employer both have many of their specific needs met, with a minimal amount of disruption. The response to these situations can very provided on relatively short notice and can be offered at the workplace or a neutral site depending on the circumstances. An objective evaluation will be made on your behalf and we will assist with appropriate referrals if necessary to other specialized service providers. We will also provide a trauma response component to your existing Employee Assistance Program. Appropriate follow up will be provided if required. We will also provide telephone consultation in situations where appropriate. All of these responses are provided on a fee for service basis or in the form of a contract Please feel free to contact us for any information or questions.

WORKSHOP

Death Notification with Professionalism and Compassion
This workshop will be interactive and is intended to provide a step by step method of delivering death notifications. It will show how the notifier can prepare for the delivery of the message by rehearsing and working with a partner while gathering any available information about the incident and the recipient. We will learn how to evaluate the information provided and to assess if it is sufficient for the circumstances. We will also discuss how mental health professionals or volunteers can work together with law enforcement personnel. We will learn how to introduce yourselves into the situation, how to conduct yourself when you are in the home or office of the recipient. We will help develop an awareness of those things that are appropriate to say as well as those things that can cause discomfort or additional pain and how to exit the situation after offering ongoing or future support if appropriate. We will also touch on the issues of boundary setting for those involved in this process. We will demonstrate how to debrief you and your partner after the event to ensure your own well being.
